#AtoZchallenge: Cuervo or Crow

Cuervo (Spanish) or Crow (English)
[courtesy of D.B. McNicol]
Hip-hop, hip-hop, the squatting boy watched the raven cross his way.

Stopping in front of him, the beady eyes studied the young boy and then suddenly unloosed a deep gurgling croak as it dropped two stones on the ground.

Startled, the boy fell backward on the hot sand, but intent on the raven the searing heat went unnoticed.

"Grandfather told me stories about you."

The raven croaked in return.

"You brought us the sun, moon, stars and water. When you brought us fire, the smoke turned your white feathers forever black."

The raven croaked once more.

"I am alone here in the desert and need fire to live. I am grateful for the fire stones."

The raven hopped a few steps and then flew off into the sky, loudly croaking his acceptance of the thanks.

    1. I couldn't come up with anything macabre so when with the mythology. Glad it worked and you enjoyed it.

  4. Why does the word cuervo in Spanish sound more alluring than the plain English crow? I like how you can write a short story around a hundred words. Great writing exercise.
