#FridayFictioneers: The Hole

This story is in response to the photo prompt at Rochelle's Friday Fictioneers.
PHOTO PROMPT © Connie Gayer
"You diggin' a hole, Grampa?"

"Yup."

"What fer?"

"Stuff."

"What kinda stuff?"

"Stuff like little boys who don't stop asking questions."

He continued digging while the young boy squatted on the edge of the hole, head on his hands, elbows on his knees.

"Grammy know you're digging in her garden?"

Wiping his face with his bandana, he leaned on the shovel.

"How 'bout you ask her for some lemonade."

"Okay!"

When the boy was gone, the old man checked the contents of the burlap bag before placing it in the hole. As he covered it with dirt he whispered, "Gonna miss you, Katy-Cat. Even me."

  2. Oh so real. And kind of a relief. Though losing a cat is deeply sad, I was worried there for a moment it might be grandma.

    1. I seem to be stuck on the sweet - maybe next week will be darker. But I knew it couldn't be grandma...at least this time. ;)

Oh, such a sweet story. I love it that Grampa is sparing the boy a life lesson for the moment. Well done.

  9. I agree with other comments. A great "slice of life" tale. Good for grandpa, as long as they tell the truth later and don't let the child wait in vain for the cat's return.

  12. As a granny, I would have done the same. It's a life lesson for parents to give, I think. I must confess, I was quite tearful when I buried my favourite cat...
