#AtoZchallenge: Kerosina or Kerosene

Kerosina [Spanish] or Kerosene [English]
[source]

"Damn that stuff stinks to high heaven, gonna take a miracle to get ridda that smell," he crinkled his nose and twisted the cap tighter as the repugnant odor swirled around him.

He wiped his hands on his threadbare stained jeans and then checked the contents of his pockets making sure what he needed was there.

He tossed the battered can into the bed of his pickup and sped down his driveway, laughing as the tires spewed dirt behind him, "Payback time, jess hope no one sees me, best if they're not home."

Dusk was just settling in as he reached his destination several miles from his home, a barely standing farmhouse surrounded by overgrown pastures and decrepit fencing.

He slowed the truck as he searched for signs of life but seeing no lights or vehicles parked in the yard, he pulled in.

He carefully stepped out of the truck, ignoring the groan of the rusty door and retrieved the can of kerosene from the back.

Setting it on the weathered front porch he pulled the paper from his back pocket and read it one more time before setting it under the can.

"Ain't got much but hope this will help you keep the youngun's warm for a bit."

As he drove off he thought about how good it felt to pay back his neighbors and friends for all they had done for him when he lost his wife last year.

He whistled a tune as he headed back home thinking, "Payback can be a good thing!"

  8. Interesting twist. I'd like to see where you would go if it was a murderous payback on his mind...
