Get or Give (or BOTH)

I have a special request. Most of my readers know that I lived in Ecuador for two years. We made many friends, both expats and locals during our time there. Not too long after we returned to the US, Ecuador suffered devastating earthquakes on the coast.
A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake has struck Ecuador resulting in death and massive destruction. Among the most impacted towns is Canoa, Manabi; just a few miles off the epicenter of the earthquake, leaving it 90% destroyed.
Our good friend Sara Coppler, who has experience in disaster relief, relocated from Cuenca to Canoa to aid in the recovery. You can read more about her efforts here. Other friends aided in the initial relief efforts by collecting food, money and clothing.

But the need will go on for a long time. Author Scarlett Braden, a close friend, came up with the idea of creating an anthology of stories written about expats by expats with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit Proyecto Saman, a project that provides housing and a safe living environment for people whose lives were shattered by the earthquakes.

FRIENDS IN FOREIGN PLACES
Many of my expat friends have written non-fiction accounts of their encounters and a few more have written short fiction stories. For those interested, I have an unusual short fiction story that differs from most. I hope you enjoy mine and all the others.

If you can't buy the book, I hope you will tell all your friends about this extraordinary effort (and share this blog post). I bought it and I will be gifting a couple of copies as well. Thank you!

Celebrate the Small Things: June 12, 2015

Well, it's Friday and time to write my post for Lexa Cain's Celebrate the Small Things.

As in the past, I may post something about writing, something personal, something random or even all the above.

Or if I have a REALLY off week, I might just post a photo or two. ;)

Well, we rented a new apartment! That means that most of my celebration is for accomplishing that, finding new tenants for our current apartment (done), selling the major furniture that we won't use in the new apartment (done), buying a wall oven for the new place (done - unfurnished in Ecuador means no appliances), starting packing AND helping hubby host a poker night. LOL! Such fun.

Are you living YOUR dream?

Live Your Dream
Sometimes easier said than done....

When I was little, my dream was to be a nurse like my mother. I could take care of people when they were sick and help them feel better. I practiced for hours on my pets, various rescued wild animals and of course, my brothers.

As I bravely marched into my teenage years, my dream changed and I wanted to be a professional actress or maybe a dancer. I loved performing, it helped me forget my somewhat dull (I thought) life and made me feel more glamorous.

Reality intruded, as it usually does, and I ended up being the proud mother of two by age twenty. I really wasn't thinking much in terms of dreams; every day was an adventure in itself. Working in a hospital brought back thoughts of nursing, but the idea passed quickly.

I did get to travel some, growing up in Massachusetts - moving to New Hampshire in 9th grade - relocating to Florida in my senior year. The service claimed my husband as their own and I got to see Georgia and Delaware as well as revisiting New Hampshire and eventually settling back in Florida. The travel bug was planted, growing slowly but there nevertheless.

The twenties flowed into the thirties - a new marriage, a third child and a new state to live in, Iowa. Dreams? Who had time for dreams? I had discovered computers and started a real career! Part-time college student, full-time programmer, over-time mother and wife. I guess I thought I was living my dream - for the time being anyway.

One day I woke up and got the news that my mother had passed on at the young age of 61. I was stunned. She was so close to leaving her nursing career for her three R's - reading, relaxing and retirement. She had spent her entire life doing for others but never really found complete satisfaction. Had she lived her dream? I don't think so, she was forced to make so many decisions that took her down a different path.

Sitting back, looking at my life, I realized I was following the same pattern. Content with mediocrity in so many areas of my life, I had stopped stretching. I had given up reaching for my dream. Was this what I really wanted? Was this what my mother would have wanted for me? I didn't think so. My oldest children were out on their own, leaving only the eight year old at home.

It's amazing what can happen when you realize you have stopped dreaming and start again. My life turned around. I met my soul mate, my husband Michael. My career soared, and I reached a peak that I had never even dared dream about. I did all the things I had always wanted to do, but never quite could find time for. I tried out for community theatre and got several parts. I tried skiing for the first time and I proved myself wrong - not only could I ski, but I even enjoyed it!

Moving stayed a part of our lives taking us from Florida to Virginia. From there we headed to Georgia, upstate New York, Colorado, Long Island NY and finally Atlanta, GA. We had good times and we had bad but there was one underlying dream that we continued to talk about - traveling in a motorhome when we retired. But why worry about that now? Retirement was years away and we had so much living to do - right?

Catastrophic events have seemed to shape my life in many ways. We had our dream house. Our kids were all grown and on their own. We were both at the top of our careers in well paying jobs.

Were we happy? Usually, at least when we got to spend some time together. It seemed like our jobs kept us apart more than together. It was in February of 1996 that my father suddenly passed away. On the long drive back home, I found myself looking at every motorhome that passed by.

"Why haven't we done anything towards make our dream a reality?" I thought. We were in the prime of our life, we had everything we'd ever wished for, but were we living our dream? Obviously not ... it was time to do something proactive.

The rest of the ride home headed us towards a new life. We both realized that we had a mutual dream that was languishing for lack of effort and if we truly wanted it to happen, we had better get busy. The elusive retirement was closer than either of us wanted to admit and yet we both knew we would want to continue working. Lots of research and reading, many trips to RV dealers & shows, questions - questions - more questions, but we did it. In September we bought our new (used) motorhome with plans to go full-time within 5 years.

But before we knew it, our plans had turned into a reality. A perfect job opportunity was offered to us and we jumped at it. It would allow us to work together, travel and live in our motorhome full-time! We would finally make our dream a reality.

Is this the end of the story? Absolutely not, this was just the beginning. We lived our dream for several years, loving the RVing lifestyle but once again, reality had to rear its head and intrude upon our lives. Mike was diagnosed with cancer, we relocated to Florida (job promotion) and we had almost 4 more wonderful years together.

He passed in November 2004 after seeing me moved and settled in a small
Tennessee town. As many know, a year ago I was working on moving back into the RV lifestyle. It didn't work....but who knows what the future will bring.

The dreams continue and life is for the living! When will it be your turn to live your dream?

~~~~~~
I wrote this in 2005, a lot more has happened in the last ten years. I took a cross-country motorcycle trip by myself (42 states, 27k miles), went to work, sold the house and pretty much everything I owned, bought a used Class C motorhome, became a full-time RVer, sold my last motorcycle, met my now husband, bought and rode two more motorcycles, published three novels plus a host of short stories, and now live in Cuenca, Ecuador. Yes, I'd say I was living my dream although it is a dream I never envisioned.
Celebrate the Small Things - Jan 23rd 2015
Well, it's Friday and time to write my post for Lexa Cain's Celebrate the Small Things.
As in the past, I may post something about writing, something personal, something random or even all the above.
Or if I have a REALLY off week, I might just post a photo. ;)
It's been a quiet week for writing - I've barely done any blogging. Why? I've been busy socializing. Yup, doing meet 'n greets with folks visiting our lovely city of Cuenca, Ecuador.
But I am still sticking to my yoga on Monday and Friday and next week hope to start adding 20-30 minutes on my off days. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
#IWSG for December: Hopeful
Can you believe it's time for a new IWSG post? Here in Ecuador summer is starting, the weather is beautiful and I'm enjoying every minute.
Although I'm on an hiatus from writing, the theme for this month's Insecure Writer's Support Group is HOPEFUL.
I resigned from NaNo last month when I realized that my writing was going nowhere. If I were a full-time writer who depended on the income, I would have plowed through and hopefully gotten past the blockage.
But I'm not. I'm retired, living in a foreign country, trying to learn a new language and it all became too much. I know I will write again. I hope my readers will still be waiting when I finally tackle book three in my Klondike Mystery series. I hope I can find new readers (and keep the old ones) when I take a step on the wild side and try some novellas featuring a new character. But regardless, I will write again.
Yes, I am hopeful....
  • Today is Independence Day in the USA, strange to be here in Ecuador.
Since I don't know if we will have Internet yet, going to stop here. Will add more if we DO get it installed in time. Till next week...celebrate the small things!
Celebrate the Small Things: Moving Along
As part of my new initiative for my blog posts, I have joined VikLit's Celebrate the Small Things - something to post on Fridays.
  • We've found a GREAT new apartment. We hadn't planned on moving. Heck, we hadn't planned on renting an unfurnished place either. While our current apartment is very nice, in a good area at a great price, we miss having an outdoor spot plus we'd love to have a view of the gorgeous Andes Mountains surrounding us. Well, we found a 6th floor apartment, with a rooftop terrace that give us almost as much room as we have now AND amazing views!
  • My visit to the cardiologist went very well. Nice consult with his wife &/or daughter helping with translations. Had and EKG and another test done...total cost? $150 End result? Adding a second blood pressure prescription as well as trying a different cholesterol med. All I want is for the shortness of breath to stop! ;)
  • I managed to send out the first newsletter in almost a year! Wow!! Hoping I don't lose all the new subscribers. (Not a subscriber? Click the link in the right hand column and join the fun. Sent out monthly! You can read the latest issue by clicking this link: Newsletter Archive link.)
  • HUBBY IS HOME!!!!!
A little late posting this but we are really busy right now with getting ready to move. PLUS we are involved in watching Ecuador at the World Cup. They won today, moving on to the next round. I promised I would buy a shirt or jacket in their colors (for sale EVERYWHERE) if they won. Such a hardship....LOL!
Happy Monday, MacBook Pro and a Survey
I know, all you work-a-day folks aren't so happy but now that I'm retired, I barely know what day of the week it is. I knew today was Monday because I had an appointment for a mani-pedi at the little shop around the corner. Part of the joy of living here is being able to splurge for a mani-pedi, topped off with a haircut trim plus a wrap repair on one fingernail. Cost? $20 including two tips. Nice, huh!
The only downside to living here is I haven't been able to concentrate long enough to do much fiction writing. I have committed myself to working on book three of my Klondike Mystery Series in June. When the first draft is done, I'll tackle book four. Both are roughly outlined - well, as much as I outline now. ;) Target is to have both books available before Christmas. Keep your fingers crossed!
As I mentioned in another post, I have made the final decision to move from a Windows laptop to a MacBook Pro this fall. I believe I can find most of the software I need to continue writing and doing minor website updates as well as personal chores. I've been spending time researching replacements and love the site alternativeto.net for this.
A couple years ago I switched from Thunderbird/Lightning to Essential Pim Pro for email, contacts and calendaring. I had paid for EPIM years earlier and knew it was stable. For whatever reason I was having issues getting Lightning to play nice with Google Calendar. With the move to a Mac, it was time to move back to Thunderbird/Lightning. What a pleasant surprise! It has come a long way since I last left and the conversion, although a little time consuming on the email side, was pleasantly painless.
Time to ask for a little input. I am trying to broaden my audience for my blog and one way to help others find it is to visit other blogs and comment. So, wondering what your favorite non-writing or reading related blog is - please leave a comment below with the link. I greatly appreciate it!
Celebrating the Small Things! Starting out...
As part of my new initiative for my blog posts, I have joined VikLit's Celebrate the Small Things - something to post on Fridays. I may post something about writing, something personal, something random or even all the above. So here is my first post!
Let's see, what was I doing this past week?
Hmmm, I wrote several blog posts both here and at Retired in Cuenca. That includes my Reflections on the A-Z Challenge.
I bought a couple of gorgeous necklaces handmade here in Cuenca (photos & story here).
I've eaten out with WAY too many friends, WAY too often - correction, not really, it was a blast.
Oh, and I joined the Celebrate the Small Things list (thank you, Shah Wharton for the suggestion). What else? Oh, I printed out our invoice for insurance here in Ecuador.
My, the list is getting long but so far not much of real interest.
Oh, I had an attack of vertigo Tuesday night and went to bed early (woke up okay, phew!).
Hope this hasn't bored you too much - maybe I'll have more interesting things to post next week!
Want to join in the fun? For this first week I will include the sign-up Linky.
First post of the New Year and first post from Ecuador!
I am writing this on my iPad Mini so it will be short. December was truly monumentally hectic but wonderful. We packed up and left our Tennessee property and headed south to Florida a few days before Thanksgiving. We saw family and friends and had a great seven day cruise to the Western Caribbean before landing at Miami airport on Dec 12th.
For anyone interested in all the gory details plus some photos you can start with my last blog entry at Back End of Nowhere then move to my last post at Retired in Cuenca
I started a short story for an anthology but had to back out. So not much writing has been done. Soon! Readers are clamoring for book three in my Klondike mystery series. (Hang in there folks....)
I have managed to get in some reading, having read the Hunger Games trilogy. It left me in a down frame of mind, wondering what others thought of it? Not sure I care to see the third movie, maybe I will change my mind after seeing the first two.
Not sure how well the formatting will work from the iPad, we will see. Here are a couple of photos from Ecuador for you.
Front door mat (sorry it's sideways)
Wall Hanging from Otalvo Market
Costumes at Otalvo market
Fresh fruits & veggies from mercado (market) for $6
One of our views from the river across the street
Yanuncay River across the street from our apartment
Okay, the draft mode in Blogger from the iPad worked, cleaned it up on the laptop, added links (not sure why we can't do that in the iPad app) and added a couple more photos.
Hmmm, maybe tomorrow I'll write? Or maybe read....Ender's Game is next! What are you reading now?
Trying to get back into a routine...
We are back home in Tennessee after SEVEN weeks on our motorcycles. What a trip! We left in HOT weather, rode in some WINDY weather and returned in COLD weather, but have to say that most of the weather was excellent. We sat out a couple of windy, wet or cold days but nothing really severe. For anyone interested, here are the posts from the trip.
I'm working hard to get the print version of "Barely a Spark" available as well as a Smashwords version. Maybe in another week? Watch for updates...oh, and be sure to read the GREAT reviews on Amazon!
A HUGE THANK YOU to all my guest authors who took time out of their busy schedules to do interviews, announce new books and more. You've made the past two month much easier on me. Please feel free to submit new guest articles anytime (that offer is open to all my author friends).
The next two months will continue on the same schedule, a once or twice a week posting. Things are really busy with our return from our trip and getting ready for our move to Ecuador. LOTS to get done and I'm afraid that writing is dropping to the bottom of the list for a bit. But I won't forget you, my wonderful readers!
