Going by the seat of your pants....

Did you ever think about where that phrase originated? As I was typing this, I wondered so I Googled it and came up with this explanation page.
This is early aviation parlance. Aircraft initially had few navigation aids and flying was accomplished by means of the pilot's judgment. The term emerged in the 1930s and was first widely used in reports of Douglas Corrigan's flight from the USA to Ireland in 1938. The old flying expression of 'flies by the seat of his trousers' was explained by Larry Conner, means going aloft without instruments, radio or other such luxuries. [source]
That's how I write, by the seat of my pants. People often ask me, so thought I'd talk a little about how I write my mystery books,

Coming from thirty years in the computer industry, ranging from data entry operator to programmer to systems analyst to VP of Client Services, I always believed it'd be a plotter. I was sure I'd be outlining the entire book, scene by scene as well as detailing every little idiosyncrasy of each character. I mean, after all, my career in IT demanded that level of detail.

Imagine my surprise when I wrote my first mystery novel, Not a Whisper. I had the prologue, which came from a dream I had written down years before, which gave me a dead body. I had a setting, an area where my late husband and I had lived, and I had a couple of characters loosely defined. I had no idea who the killer was, or even who the dead body belonged to...I just wrote. I think in that book, the killer changed half a dozen times.

The same thing happened in book two in the Klondike series, Barely a Spark. I knew who was going to die but had no idea if it was murder, suicide or an accident. I just wrote. With book three, Almost a Touch, I kind of knew who the killer was but wasn't sure who was behind the killing (you'll have to read the book to understand what I mean).

Three more mysteries, all set in Hawaii, and I wrote the same way. By the seat of my pants... I guess it's working!

Moving right along and what's next?

What a busy week this has been! I realize I have been very remiss in posting here.

Even worse, I haven't sent out a newsletter in a LOoong time. I hope I can get back on track soon.

So what have I been doing? Well, for one thing, I published my first fantasy middle grade short story book (a collection of seven short stories).

Fanciful characters, amazing lands, and creatures unheard of in our world! Duits, wizards, rock fairies, Numanitoonics, tree sprites are just some of the fantastical creatures that come along looking for aid from the likes of Bernie Bushkin, Nicola Nippernosh, Luca Lucknless, Piper Pendergast and others.

These seven short stories were written with the idea of creating worlds where imagination runs free. Fanciful characters, amazing lands, and creatures unheard of in our world. I hope these stories will fuel a thirst for reading and encourage young folks to be more creative.

Each story has a life lesson involved - losing a best friend, bullying, missing a parent, helping others, dealing with family and more.

I also have been working hard to finish writing the second novella in my Lei Crime Kindle World "Paradise" series, Paradise Dead. I even pulled an all-nighter this past weekend. And I got it done! It's out for final edits and will be ready for the big launch on August 17th.

If you haven't read the first book, this is a great time to do so!

So what's next? That's easy. The first draft of the third book in my Klondike Mystery Series, Almost a Touch has been sitting on the back burner. Next week I will tackle it again with the hope of getting it published before the end of September.

If you haven't read the first book, this is a great time to do so!
When Cherie Marshall catches her fiancé and best friend in a compromising position, she cancels her upcoming wedding and jumps at the chance to escape to quiet Klondike, Pennsylvania to care for her elderly aunt. She thought her biggest issue would be adapting to life in the middle of a National Forest, so very different from her upbringing in the deserts of Arizona.

But that was before she met State Trooper Fire Marshall Jamison "Jazz" Maddox at the scene of a mysterious fire. As they both become acquainted with the close-knit Klondike residents, things get complicated as Cherie and Jazz find themselves in the middle of a local crime wave where arson, kidnapping, embezzlement and a decades old murder are just the tip of the iceberg.

    National Novel Writing Month - 2014 #NaNo

I'm afraid my blogging will be light this month because I am doing NaNoWriMo again. My first year was 2012 and I did both Camp NaNo and regular NaNo (August & November). The result? Two books eventually published. I missed doing 2013 because of travel and moving to Ecuador.

It's time to get book three in my Klondike Mystery series written and this will give me the push I need to get started. "Almost a Touch" starts at the same time as the events in book two, "Barely a Spark", and then continues. Several of the characters from Klondike, PA are included but the main setting is in Kalispell, MT.

NaNo starts on November first and to be a winner you have to have written 50k words by the end of the month. I finally got started yesterday and have a whole 1250 words written, won't get much done this week due to seeing friends but by this weekend, I should be BIC HOK TAM (Butt in Chair, Hands on Keyboard, Typing Away Madly).

So, please continue to drop in from time to time to see my Monday Motivation posts (here is the latest) as well as check on my progress using the sidebar widget for NaNo.

Oh, and if you haven't read any of my Klondike Mysteries, maybe it's time to try book one, "Not a Whisper" - currently the price is reduced to just $2.99!

    I'm not missing - honest!

I know, I've missed several posts but we've been busy. First, I was editing "Not a Whisper" getting it ready for the sale (see below). Then we've been doubly busy getting ready to head to the US late next week. SO much to do! Trying to figure out what needs to go back to the US with us, buying gifts for family and close friends. Making a list of what I need to pack for the Writers' Police Academy.
Working on the schedule of sessions I want to take - I'm doing a driving simulation, as well as being on a team of forensic investigators for a murder. Fun!!

But I can't forget the big news, the first book in my Klondike Mystery Series is ON SALE! Here is the sale schedule:

    August 23, 2014 at  8:00 AM (PST)  20h     $1.99 61%
    August 24, 2014 at  4:00 AM (PST)  20h     $2.99 41%
    August 25, 2014 at 12:00 AM (PST) 20h       $3.99 21%
August 25, 2014 at  8:00 PM (PST)  Original list price $4.99

Oh, you don't have to have a Kindle to read the book - check out the Kindle Reading apps for your PC, Mac, smartphone or tablet.

Be sure to tell your friends about the sale - get it before it's back to full price!

In closing, I hate to say it but I don't think I'll be back on a regular schedule till the middle of September. Keep checking by!!

    Celebrate the Small Things: Talented

As part of my new initiative for my blog posts, I have joined VikLit's Celebrate the Small Things - something to post on Fridays.

I may post something about writing, something personal, something random or even all the above.

Or if I have a REALLY off week, I might just post a photo. ;)

New Cover Coming for Not a Whisper
Klondike, PA - a small town with big secrets
I am so grateful that my talented cover designer, Elizabeth Mackey of Elizabeth Mackey Graphics, could take my ramblings and translate them into this gorgeous book cover. Looking forward to the cover she produces for Barely a Spark! Definitely cause for celebration this week!!

Trying to get back into a routine...

We are back home in Tennessee after SEVEN weeks on our motorcycles. What a trip! We left in HOT weather, rode in some WINDY weather and returned in COLD weather, but have to say that most of the weather was excellent. We sat out a couple of windy, wet or cold days but nothing really severe. For anyone interested, here are the posts from the trip.
I'm working hard to get the print version of "Barely a Spark" available as well as a Smashwords version. Maybe in another week? Watch for updates...oh, and be sure to read the GREAT reviews on Amazon!

A HUGE THANK YOU to all my guest authors who took time out of their busy schedules to do interviews, announce new books and more. You've made the past two month much easier on me. Please feel free to submit new guest articles anytime (that offer is open to all my author friends).

The next two months will continue on the same schedule, a once or twice a week posting. Things are really busy with our return from our trip and getting ready for our move to Ecuador. LOTS to get done and I'm afraid that writing is dropping to the bottom of the list for a bit. But I won't forget you, my wonderful readers!

    "Barely a Spark" - reviews

Thought I'd pass along a few reviews for Barely a Spark and Not a Whisper. I hope if you have read one of them, you'll take a minute to post a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads. Thank you!!

From James Noel, Quality Book Club Reviewer: Not a Whisper
What did you think about the ending?
The ending was definitely a surprise but I did like the way it tied in with the rest of the story. I also especially liked that the author did not have an open ending for this book when it is part of a series.
What is the climax of the book and why?
When Cherie is in the interrogation room with Jazz and David. The opening of this chapter had me sitting at the edge of my seat. Was something going to happen? What was Cherie getting herself into? I'm sure other readers will feel the same way.
Who do you think the author intended to read this book and why?
Anyone who likes a mystery set in a small town will fall in love with this book and its characters. Think Midsummer Murders. Everyone knows everyone and their dog. No incident goes undiscussed. In this book, the author introduces the breakfast club which offers the reader a spectator's seat to the happenings in the town.
From Wm. Mosher: Barely a Spark
Barely a Spark of down time as I read this second installment to the Klondike Mysteries. The only thing is, given Donna' s hectic schedule, it is going to be a while until the third book is in our hands. I guess we'll just have to re-read the first two as we wait.
A big thumbs up for characterizations, plotting, and pacing. The editing was a little rushed in places, but that is minor. Given the generally poor quality of self-published works, these are a pleasant find. More, please.
    From Jayelle: Barely a Spark
McNicols has continued her story of the little town of Klondike in this second book of the series. In it she has rounded out the characters in both towns, Klondike and Bradford. The mystery has continued and so have the love stories. Parents will sympathize with the problems of Janie and Kat as they struggle to raise their children alone and face the teen-age years.
New characters have been introduced and readers will have to wait to see how new twists and turns with them will develop in the next book (which can't come soon enough). I highly recommend this book for the way it hold one's attention and for the entertainment value. But, through it all, the way the author brings one into the everyday life of police, firefighters and victims is a lesson in human behavior well done.
Do you have YOUR copy of The Klondike Mysteries yet?

    Klondike Mysteries - Update!

I am in the midst of my final edits on "Barely a Spark" with inputs from my three editors/proofreaders. Still hoping to get it published on Amazon before we leave for our Route 66 trip (looks like we'll leave on Saturday). The early reviews have been very positive!

If you haven't read book one, "Not a Whisper", maybe it's time! You can find it at both Amazon (ebook/print) and Smashwords (ebook). Remember - you do NOT need to own a Kindle to read Amazon's ebooks. You can download a free reader app for your PC, laptop, tablet or smart phone HERE.

Latest review on "Not a Whisper":
New 5 star review on Amazon:
"This is the first book in quite a while that was hard for me to put down. I stayed up entirely too late and just about drained the battery on my phone reading Donna B. McNicol's tale of murder, arson, kidnapping and, oh yes, a bit of romance. The ending was quite a surprise! Buy it. Read it. Wait impatiently for the next in the Klondike series."

    #IWSG for September

Time for another post for the Insecure Writer's Support Group, Alex Cavanaugh's creation for writers. The first Wednesday of every month, the participants write about what makes them insecure about their career/passion/vocation.

If you've been following me for very long, you know I've been working on the second in my Klondike Mystery series. I loved writing my first book. I had fun writing my first book.

I almost wrote way too many spoilers in my first draft of book two, something I hadn't considered. It's a fine line, how much to say about the first book - both the events and the characters. I left a few things hanging at the end of book one so spoilers aren't a good thing.

So for whatever reason I'm not as happy with this book as the first. I'm hoping that doesn't come through in the book but my beta readers seem to be enjoying it. Oh well, time will tell...hoping for publication before the end of September.

If you write in a series, do you always leave it hanging in some way? I'm thinking I won't do that again.

"Not a Whisper" needs two more reviews!

If you have bought, read and enjoyed my mystery novel, "Not a Whisper", but haven't posted a review on Amazon yet - PLEASE consider taking a few minutes to do so.

Never written a review on Amazon? Here are some step-by-step instructions with pictures to walk you through it.

No idea what to write? Pretend you're telling your best friend about the book and what you enjoyed. Also, take time to read the other reviews.

Why do I need two more reviews? Well, there is a new advertising opportunity for authors but a book must have 4.2 stars (DONE) and a minimum of 25 reviews. I have 23. :-(

Besides, all authors like to hear why you liked their book! So, TIA (thanks in advance).

    Once I was lost....

I know, you thought I was lost and maybe I was, at least a little. Lost in life for sure. I've been ultra busy with daily tasks as well as spending five days at Walt Disney World with our almost 5 y/o granddaughter. I think I've recovered...LOL!

Tomorrow is moving day for the RV, from Central Florida to the east coast for a week. Another busy week lined up visiting family and riding the motorcycles. Then it's on to Maryland for two weeks of family, doctor appointments and getting packed for a month's vacation in Ecuador. Phew!

So what does this all have to do with writing? A lot because I just haven't had much spare time to write. I have been working on getting my two novels ready for print versions at Createspace (a subsidiary of Amazon). I am currently waiting for my print proof of "Home Again" and am in the process of uploading the files for "Not a Whisper". Our extremely SLOW internet connections here in central Florida haven't helped. I had really hoped to have both books in print by the end of this month but not sure I will make it. But I should have them both ready before we leave the country. ;-)

One other priority has been working on walking daily. The five days at Disney proved I was out of shape (like I really needed to be told). I committed to walking an hour every day once we got back. Well, slowly walking all day is very different than walking at a 3mph pace so not every day has been at that level. I do manage 30 minutes every morning and try for at least another 15 in the late afternoon. I even started blogging about it for anyone who'd like to join in the "fun". Hubby started a new blog where is is tracking his progress. He's been able to do the hour..guess it's that three years younger thing. [giggle]

So, that's my last several weeks in a nutshell. Oh, my current writing? Well, I have committed to writing a short story for an anthology with a group of great author friends. When that is done, I'll be tackling book two in the Klondike Mystery series, "Barely a Spark".

Oh, and before I forget, please read this great blog post about book reviews. And again, thank you to everyone who has bought, read, and/or reviewed my books! It is greatly appreciated.

Signing off for now. I'll try to check in more often...honest! ;-)

    A quick THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who has purchased my first mystery, Not a Whisper.  Sales are going well. So far I'm at 97 books sold - think I can make 100 before the end of the month? The book is also available on Smashwords for those who have a Nook or other e-reader.

The reviews so far at Amazon have been good so I guess folks are enjoying reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Right now word of mouth is the best promotion, so if you have read the book, I hope you will tell your friends (and feel free to blog about it, too). Thanks!

Oh, I hope to have the book available in print by the end of March for those who would prefer a paperback copy.

Remember, you don't need a Kindle to read the Kindle version. Amazon has readers for computers, tablets, smartphones, etc. HERE. You can also download the free Klondike Kompanion and learn a little more about the main characters.

My first mystery is LIVE on Amazon!

The good news is that my first mystery novel, Not a Whisper, is finally live on Amazon. Remember, you don't need a Kindle to read it. Amazon has readers for computers, tablets, smartphones, etc. HERE. You can also download the free Klondike Kompanion and learn a little more about the main characters. If you've been following me for a while, you might remember that this was my Camp NaNoWriMo novel from this past August.

Soon I'll be starting book two in the series, Barely a Spark, due out this year. Please pass the word and for those of you that buy the book, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

#IWSG: Writing Funks and Moving Enough

Sorry for being MIA since the cruise, it's been a struggle. First it was due to the chest cold I brought back with me. Week one - lost. Then I got preoccupied with our upcoming month long vacation in Ecuador - more weeks gone. I'm trying to get back on track, honest, I am. Writing has been way too sporadic and I have much to write!

I hope to finish the final edit of "Not a Whisper" this week and get it uploaded to Amazon. I hate missing deadlines, even if they were artificially created by me. First I missed Dec 31st, then Jan 31st. Keep your fingers crossed that I can make this one.

I have taken some time just for me, going for some motorcycle rides for one thing. I also need to start moving more, physically. I'm sitting too much and getting stiff and inflexible. It's been years since I did yoga and even then I only did very basic moves. Time to get the mat out and stretch these tight muscles, tendons and ligaments. I was actually pretty good on the cruise, using both the recumbent bike and the elliptical.

How do you fight falling into a writing funk? What helps you get out of it and back being productive? Do you sit too much or are you good about getting off your butt and moving enough?

    Sigh.....

Who's a Spunky Senior and other updates

Me, that's who! Check it out HERE. Not much else is new. I did get a nice 4 star review at Amazon for my romance novel, Home Again. I'm finally over my cold, the cough is gone but I haven't made much progress on my mystery novel editing. With my current schedule it will be next week before I get back to it. Still trying to get it published before the end of the month. Phew!!

So as I said, not much new but wanted to drop a few notes to my readers!

We chat with the Klondike Breakfast Club from 'Not a Whisper'

Today is the another in a series of interviews with some of the main characters featured in The Klondike Mystery series. The first book is "Not a Whisper" which is due out at Amazon and Smashwords soon.

Guys, hey there. Can you hold it down? Hello [whistles]. Thank you. Let's make some introductions. Pansy, would you introduce everyone please?

PANSY: Sure. To my left is Edy Wiggins and her husband, Tom. They moved to Klondike from Pittsburgh where Tom worked retired from Pittsburgh Power.

Hi Edy, Tom. Nice to meet you. What did you do before you moved here and how do you stay busy now?

TOM: I putter around our log cabin doing maintenance on things, keeping it up. I spend a lot of time walking with our dog, Mags. In my spare time I volunteer for the local wildlife group.

EDY: I work part-time for the Ranger Station during the busy season. I've done that for several years and really enjoy it. I used to do a lot more craft work, now I do it mostly during the winter. I quilt, sew, paint and make some unique Mountain Men to sell.

PANSY: Next to them is Merry Jenkins, one of my best friends.

Nice to meet you, Merry. Is that your real name or a nickname?

MERRY: My real name is Meribel but I've been called Merry since I was a kid. I've lived in this area or close to it all of my life. I've buried two husbands here and sometimes wonder if working as a hospice nurse jinxed me.

PANSY: Beside Merry are the Duncans, Jeff and Sarah. Jeff is an ER Tech at the Bradford Hospital and Sarah is a special ed teacher. They've been working on finishing their house since they moved in, let's see, six years ago?

JEFF: Okay, okay. So I'm a little slow but work gets in the way.

SARAH: Yeah, work on his pole barn for his toys.

Um, moving on, who's next, Pansy?

PANSY: Bob Rounder is our oldest member, aren't you, Bob. But you'd never know it if you saw how active he is.

BOB: You need to come by around Labor Day and check out my yard sale. I work all year to get ready for it. Everyone is welcome.

Thank you, Bob. I'll have to see if I can come by. Pansy?

PANSY: Next to him are our newest members, Mike and Marie Hilliard. They're new to Klondike. You guys want to introduce yourselves?

MIKE: Sure, we're both still working. I'm a telecommunications project manager and work on out of town projects so I tend to travel a lot.

MARIE: I work for the same company as Mike but I work online, from home, tracking the projects. I dabble in writing in my spare time. We really love it up here, the quiet natural beauty was a big draw for us.

I have to agree bout the beauty of this area, of course I haven't been here in the winter. Next?

PANSY: Here are our two single guys, Corey Tanner and Kevin Sullivan. I'll let them tell you about themselves.

COREY: Hey there, nice to meet you. I'm actually widowed, not single. I lost the love of my life, Fiona, to breast cancer. Really took me down for a few years but I'm doing better now.

KEVIN: Morning. I mostly come up to Klondike on the weekends, enjoying the quiet in my little cabin. Love coming up for hunting season. I live down in Bradford during the week.

Thanks everyone. Is there anyone from the Klondike Breakfast Club that's missing?

PANSY: We're missing our two geezers, Gary Patchett and Ed Williams. They have a cabin down the road a bit where they come to get away from their wives.

Course we still haven't mentioned our hostess, Kat Daily, the owner of the Kat's Klondike Kafe and her part-time waitress, Janie Crocker. I'd call them over but they're both busy taking care of other customers.

They're both raising families. Kat has a seventeen year old son who graduated this year. Janie has twelve year old twin boys, a sixteen year old daughter and an eighteen year old boy. Kat's husband is a long distance truck driver and Janie's husband is currently out on disability from a logging accident.

This is quite an eclectic group. How did the breakfast club start?

PANSY: It really just sort of happened. A couple of us would stop in for breakfast several times a week. We'd end up sitting at the same table, chatting and enjoying the company. We always had a good time, lots of laughs. That encouraged others to join us, we'd just move chairs and add a table if we had to.

Sounds like everyone comes from different areas and you sure cover a range of ages. Do you do other things together?

Sure. We're all active in the local volunteer fire department auxiliary. We work various volunteer activities like Stinkfest-

    Stinkfest?

Yeah, the local leek festival. We help out every year. Same with the town wide yard sale in Bradford. It's always a good time.

What will become of the KBs as you inevitably age?

Who? Not us. We're not every going to grow up, are we? [group laughter]

Thanks again for taking time to talk to me. One last question, how does it feel to become part of a series of mystery books?

    EVERYONE: Amazing!

We chat with Alan Baumann from 'Not a Whisper'

Today is the another in a series of interviews with some of the main characters featured in The Klondike Mystery series. The first book is "Not a Whisper" which is due out at Amazon and Smashwords soon.

Welcome Mr. Baumann. Thank you for stopping by for a chat.

Good morning,. I wanted to let you know that I don't get up this early for just anyone. And please, just call me Alan.

Why is that? I thought firefighters were used to working all hours?

They are and I did, but then I retired. [chuckle]

Ah, that explains it. So you were a firefighter with Bradford Fire Department?

That was my last assignment. Over the years I've worked for many different departments. I retired as Chief of the Bradford FD last winter. Then Trooper Maddox got me involved in this interesting case and I came back as a consultant. Sure has kept me hopping lately.

A little birdy told me you planned to take a dream vacation soon?

True, I've already booked it. Going fly fishing in Montana, up around Glacier National Park. Leave the first week in August and don't come back till the end of the month.

That's some trip. I take it fishing is your hobby?

That and eating. Oh, and admiring pretty women. Pretty much sums up my favorite things. [chuckle]

How long have you lived in Bradford, PA?

Hmm, let me think, must be almost twenty years now. Long enough to know there isn't a better place to live.

    Oh? Why is that?

Just look around you, such a great area. Lots of wildlife, four pretty seasons, hunting, fishing, hiking and the best friends anyone could ever ask for. I've made lifetime friendships since I moved here. Close enough to Buffalo, NY for anything major if you can't find it locally. Course the Internet has changed that. Easy to order stuff online and get it shipped. This is the life!

Sounds like you're sold on the area. Seems like there's been a bit of a crime wave lately. Is that normal?

Let's just say that there is crime everywhere. Sometimes you're insulated from it. Me? I like to get immersed in it. Love chasing the bad guys and seeing them get what they deserve.

Any last thoughts for our readers?

Read the book. [chuckle] Say, you gonna eat that donut?

We chat with Cherie Marshall from 'Not a Whisper'

Today is the first in a series of interviews with some of the main characters featured in The Klondike Mystery series. The first book is "Not a Whisper" which is due out at Amazon and Smashwords soon.

Good morning, Cherie, thanks for stopping by to chat with us.

Hi, nice to meet you. I understand you interviewed my Aunt Pansy yesterday.

Yes we did. She's quite the character. Would you tell us a little about yourself?

Well, I'm 32 and single although I was engaged once. I was born in Prescott, Arizona and went to college in Tucson. I'm an aspiring journalist but have to admit to doing more waitress work than writing.

Well that's pretty concise. So what brought you to Klondike?

My Aunt Pansy had a heart attack. My cousin Rose couldn't get enough leave to come home to stay with her and my cousin Donald was wrapped up in his growing antiques business. It was an easy decision for me. No real reason to stay in Tucson so I volunteered to come help.

That's so nice. How does Klondike compare with Tucson?

There is no comparison. Tucson is a good sized city, arid climate, quite warm in the summer. No matter what you need, you can find it there. Klondike is a tiny little town nestled in the middle of the Allegheny National Forest. It's at least fifteen miles to the closest gas station and closer to twenty for groceries or anything else. It's more humid here and my skin is loving that. The summer weather has been gorgeous but I can't say about the winters. I've heard they can be pretty severe.

So you don't plan to stay in Klondike?

No, as soon as Aunt Pansy is ready, I'll be heading back to Tucson.

Um, what about this new love interest we heard about?

[sigh] I really don't know what will happen after I leave the area.

What do you do in your spare time, both here and in Tucson?

That's an easy one. I love the outdoors and hiking. Sedona is one of my favorite hiking areas in Arizona but I have grown to love hiking here in the National Forest. Of course I'm always looking for a good book to read.

What has been your favorite part of visiting the Klondike area?

The people, I love the people. So friendly and helpful, so kind and caring. Of course they all seem to have their own little quirks but I love that, too. As a writer I enjoy people watching. I am really going to miss all my new friends. The KBs, the Klondike Breakfast club folks, well, I wish I could bring them all with me. They give me hope that there is life after sixty. Like my Aunt Pansy. She refuses to yield to her age and I love it.

Our time has run out but thank you for answering out questions. I know our readers are growing to love the Klondike area as much as you have. Any last words?

Cherish your family. You never know how much time you will have with them. So tell those close to you how much you love them, tell them every chance you get.
