"How long we gotta stay out here?" The littlest boy sniffed and swiped his arm across his tear-streaked face.

The oldest boy sighed, glancing between the overhead window and his younger brothers. "Don't know fer sure. Want some candy?" He pulled two pieces of hard candy out of the torn pocket of his shorts then dug deeper to find a third piece. He knelt beside them with his offering.

The middle boy quickly grabbed his, stripped off the wrapper and was sucking on it contentedly. He opened the other two pieces, passed one to the youngest, then ruffled his hair. "Soon, I promise."

The three boys sat on the sidewalk enjoying the warmth of the sun peeking between the old buildings of their neighborhood. As it waned, the window overhead opened with a slam. Their father stuck his head out. "Come on in boys and meet your baby sister."

  4. Oh, I like that! I thought something more horrible was going on, though depending on the year, I guess they would be worried about their mother. Glad there was a happy ending!

  6. Ooh! Very cool. I like the way you did that. I was expecting something sad. Maybe even dreadful. You're tricky. I like it.
