Insecure Writer's Support Group - June Post

Where did the last month go? I swore when April was done and my flash fiction for the April A to Z Competition was complete, that I'd work on my romance WIP, A Montana Chance. Guess what...I spent ONE DAY on it, yesterday! Eeek! I did get some clean-up done, more research and organization as well as 900 words written. But come on, I wanted to get this done by the end of July so I could concentrate on my mystery WIP, Not a Whisper.

So my Insecure Writers Support Group whine is about needing to better prioritize my time. I have to really start out writing as soon as I get on the computer, otherwise I get lost in a world of blog posts, emails, Facebook, Triberr, HootSuite, Pinterest, GoodReads, Amazon stats, etc.

I have signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo for August, my impetus to spit out the first draft of Not a Whisper. I still have to plot it out a bit as well as flesh out my characters. Plus I lose almost ten days while we travel from Delaware to Tennessee and also attend the CMA Music Fest.

Oh well, it will all get done....eventually. I have had some great grandbaby time as well as Twinkie time (twin step-granddaughters that graduated this year). That's important, too!

  1. I also need to prioritize my time better. My family takes top priority, but I also find myself surfing about online or watching shows I've seen a hundred times to avoid doing any real work.

I know what my problem is. Doing something about it is another matter.

  2. There's a Camp NaNo in August? I really wanted to do this month's Camp but I'm still working on the edits I meant to have finished back when there was still snow on the ground.

So I too need to better prioritize my time. Facebook, Twitter and Blogger can survive without me. My book...not so much.

  3. I've not figured out if the problem is that I don't accomplish as much in a given time as I did 20 years ago or if the hours have been shrunk down. I've noticed a great many of the food products we buy have less in them than they did - rather than raise the price. Maybe it's the same with time.

Much like you I find it difficult to get everything done and I don't even have granddaughters to contend with!

  4. Oh gosh! Blog posts and Facebook divert me too - I think it's reluctance to work!

  5. This is the story of my life. The internet is such a trap isn't it? Especially when there are so many interesting and insightful writers out there to interact with. I've started considering turning the internet off when I sit down to write so there is nothing to distract me. It's good to know that there are other out there who do the same thing. Hope you can get a handle on your prioritizing soon!

  6. Makes you wonder why it has to be so hard. For me, I think years of being a successful multi-tasker is part of it. I can't just sit and watch TV, I have to have my laptop, touchpad or phone handy to dabble on. LOL!

  7. Sure is, I'm registered and terrified. Never done a NaNo before. I knew June was out because of traveling from the NE to Tennessee plus the 5 days of Music Fest. August will still be tough, especially if I do the Mystery Writers Conference in Nashville. Gulp....

  8. Don't get me started on my shrinking product rant.... :-( Grrrrr......

It amazed me after retirement how little free time I had. How the heck did I raise kids and work rull-time (sometimes full+ part-time)?

  9. What? Reading blogs and browsing around Facebook isn't work? LOL!!

  10. Donna, as you said it will all get done! Am feeling like this now with school almost out and a 9 yr old at home and not nearly enough summer camps planned for him! LOL. But then I think of 2 things. 1: I love this time now with my son and will slow down and enjoy the summer 2: I love being a writer and that I have all these projects I cant get to fast enough. And you too I suspect. :)

  11. I know what you mean. It's so easy to get lost in everything else and kinda forget to get back to a manuscript and such. Good luck with Camp NaNo in August!

  12. Organization with time/resources is always a tough one and something I struggle with, as well.

It's a tough balancing act but, like with so many other things, practice is the key.

    Best wishes!

  13. Hey Donna..I got your name from the IWSG..sometimes life does get in the way of us finishing...or starting!..our projects, but, like you say,it will get done..grandchild time is important too...I tend to get lost playing games and reading other blogs too, it's good to know I'm not alone! Nice to 'meet' you!

  15. Hi :)

Just popping in from IWSG .

Ahhhh, yes, I feel your pain, I am useless at time management *sigh*

There always seems to be something better to do than write lol

    Good luck hon xx

  16. I signed up for Camp too after you mentioned it to me. I hope I have more success with it than I am having with the June version! So far all I've done is copy my WIP from my blog to MS Word so I can start working on it! Too many good excuses for procrastination!

  18. Firstly would like to mention they are gorgeous dresses :) Prioritising is hard when juggling so many things, I usually only end up writing when Im about to go to bed

  19. Oh yes, I lose track of time so easily when on Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and blogs. Fun distractions they are, but I find it difficult to write afterwards. So I just have to avoid them until after I've finished whatever writing project I'm working on for the day.

Then again, seems like I've read somewhere that writing distractions are needed sometimes to let a story ferment - so it might turn out to be a good thing once you get your writing schedule back on track.

Wow, going to the CMT fest would be so much fun! Have a great time!

  20. I suspect that turning off the Internet is my only choice, too. Sigh....

  21. You just have to wonder where the time goes...I'm barely keeping my head above water while we are here at the CMA Music Fest. The weather has been gorgeous, so that has kept me outside even more. LOL! Enjoy your summer with your son!

  23. Hi Eve, I haven't had time to visit anyone on the list. Haven't had any blog reading time while here t the Music Fest. I'll be visiting all the blogs of my commenters (and a few others I follow) next week. Phew!

You are far from alone...LOL! Looks like it's an issue for most of us. So easy to get distracted.

  25. Hi Vikki, thanks for stopping by! I'll be making the IWSG rounds when we're done with the CMA Music Fest. Just too busy with having fun....;-)

  26. I plan to write each morning BEFORE I read emails, FB, blogs, or anything else. It's the only way I can do it.

Keep the faith, you've had a really tough couple of weeks. We all fail at times, but it's the getting back up that counts!

  27. Thanks so much, Ella. I'm going to be late making my IWSG rounds but really appreciate everyone stopping in and commenting.

  28. Thanks...the twins are such sweet girls. I've only known them for 4 years but it's been fun watching them grow.

For me, I think mornings are going to be best. Before I open emails, read blogs or check FB. That will be my best writing time. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  29. Hi Marla, like you I am thinking mornings before I do anything else. If I start, even one website or one blog, I'm doomed.

I do think once I get in the morning habit that I might take another go at it in the evenings. I just need to get out of the morning FB/twitter/email/blog habit and I really have to pare down my blog reader list. Sigh....

  30. Oh I hear ya on distractions. I need to prioritize my time better too. Life tends to take over and my plans fizzle.
Sorry I'm getting here so late. Thanks for visiting my blog.
    Have a great weekend!
