My new toy....

Not really a toy, even though it might look like one. After much indecision, I finally made one. I had vacillated between getting an iPad, a refurbed MacBook Air or a small, inexpensive laptop. I wanted something I could set up strictly for writing. No email, no Facebook, no Twitter, no interruptions. I also wanted something more portable than my 5#, 17" laptop.

The iPad had the glitz and glitter but I was concerned about typing on it, even with an external keyboard. I loved the MacBook Air and we had often talked about when our next PC died, moving to a Mac. That said, I was concerned about flipping back and forth between two different O/S.

The netbooks were just too small although the price was right, the ultrabooks were perfect except for price. So I started looking at the 11-13" notebooks. I finally settled on the AWESOME Samsung Series 9 (an ultrabook) that I found at TigerDirect. It was refurbished and the price was right.

So now I am in the process of setting it up for Scrivener, Jarte (reads .txt, .rtf, .docx, .doc) and Dropbox. I've removed Norton and Adobe Reader (both bloatware, in my opinion) and installed Cool PDF and AVG Free

Now to get started back on my romance WIP so I can be ready for Camp NaNoWriMo in August! I'm excited!!

  1. I LOVE new toys! Sounds like you are going to have fun with that dedicated writing instrument!
BTW, never fear flipping back and forth between OSs. It's good for your brain! And it isn't that hard once you accept the feeling of momentary dyslexia. Happy writing!

  4. It looks sweet, Donna. May you have many happy hours of writing on your new toy. And thanks for the valuable info on apps.

I love writing on my iPad with a bluetooth keyboard. At the end of every writing session I mail the draft to myself as a Word attachment. All in all, I love my iPad more than any human being should love a machine.

  5. Gotta love new tech toys! Sounds like a good choice. I use a 14" HP laptop and I've been very happy with it - except that I need to follow your example and remove the internet, or at least block Facebook, Twitter, Triberr, blogs, etc. I do tend to spend too much time piddling around on them instead of writing my stuff... speaking of which... :-(

  6. I'm really like it...just had to tweak the screen resolution to make things a bit larger for me.

The size and weight (and thinness) are amazing!

  7. It is going to take more than a new expensive toy to get you to overcome your Twitter and blog reading addiction. Cheaper, simpler solution would have been to just lose your air card and turn off Wifi.

  8. What a good idea separating the constructive art of writing to the sometimes time wasting art of facebook! Going back to basics like the type writer! And I'd go for Samsung any day!! xx

  9. So far it's working out well...except that I'm using the main laptop the most, trying to get six weeks of blog posts pre-loaded to cover me while I'm doing Camp NaNoWriMo.
