#Write4Ten Prompt: Monitor

Write4Ten

I've been writing my Write 4 Ten stories in the actual prompt but now that my online time is sporadic and limited, I will be posting them here...when I have ten minutes to spare.

He shook and tried to keep his teeth from chattering, not with cold but with fear; it was close, too close and looking very hungry. His nose itched and he thought he might sneeze, not what he needed to do right now. A hiss broke the silence and he held his breath, hoping against hope that it wasn't coming his way.

Struggling to maintain his position behind the garbage can next to an old oak tree, he thought about his options. Could he out run it? He had no idea. Could he blind it with his flashlight? Probably not, it was a cheapie that barely spit out a stream of light. He could just wait till morning but could he really squat here all night?

He slowly let out his breath, listening for any movement in his direction. If he could just wait long enough, maybe the park police would come by and scare it off. Moving as slowly as possible, he tried to stretch out his legs silently. Oh no, now he had to pee! This was getting worse by the minute.

He sneaked a look as he settled himself against the tree. What the hell was a Komodo Dragon, the largest lizard in the Monitor family, doing in the middle of Central Park?

  1. Nice entry with suspense building before we discover what "it" is. I like the idea of making ten minutes count. Thanks for that reminder. I'm a new follower from iWrite network. Hope you'll come find me too.

  3. LOVE IT. Such a great backhanded twist on the word "monitor." Poor guy - his day is going from bad to worse, isn't it? ;)

But it will make for a great story to tell at parties later.... :)
